New Orleans Jazz
Origin of Jazz: Jazz is said to be rooted in Western African and Western music traditions; yet America is said to be its land of origin. Jazz originated in New Orleans in 1900's. During this period New Orleans had one of the largest slave populations and also boasted of the biggest community of colored people. These slaves developed a unique style of music known as New Orleans Jazz to communicate their feelings to each other. This style of music later on came to be known as Jazz.
New Orleans Jazz: New Orleans Jazz witnessed a sea of change over a period of time. Jazz melodies were combined with European compositions to produce music, which came to be known as ragtime. The chief characteristic of New Orleans Jazz is its improvisation. With every generation, jazz musicians improvised the style and notes of jazz music to produce new and sensational sounds. The versatility of New Orleans Jazz music makes it a popular choice of music for all occasions, from funerals, weddings, parades, to festivals.
Jazz Age: The period around the 1920s began to be known as Jazz Age as New Orleans Jazz was brought to the northern cities of Chicago and New York. Jazz music soared in popularity as more and more Americans became hooked to it.
Forms of Jazz: Variations in jazz music brought forth several different forms of jazz music, including Dixieland, swing, cool jazz, Latin, and Soul Jazz.
New Orleans Jazz Fest: New Orleans Jazz festival began to be celebrated in the 1970s through the jazz fest. The first event boasted of a huge line up including Duke Ellington and Fats Domino. Till date the New Orleans Festival is celebrated with the aim of exhibiting the unique musical heritage, art, craft, and food of New Orleans.
Every year, the New Orleans jazz festival draws huge crowds and showcases musical talent from New Orleans and Louisiana. On the cards this year are performers such as Rod Stewart, Jon Mayer, Harry Connick Jr. and ZZ Top.
