New Orleans Jazz Festival
The New Orleans jazz Festival is also referred to as Jazz Fest. Celebrated annually, this fest commemorates the rich musical traditions of New Orleans and Louisiana.
Origin of the Jazz Fest: The tradition of holding the New Orleans Jazz Festival was begun in 1970 by George Wein. Common venues for the New Orleans Jazz fest include the Louis Armstrong Park, New Orleans Municipal Auditorium, and New Orleans Fairgrounds.
The aim of New Orleans jazz Festival is to celebrate the rich musical culture of New Orleans and Louisiana. The Jazz Fest exhibits all styles of music, such as blues, R&B, gospel music, and Latin Rock. The main attraction of the fest is Jazz music, in both contemporary and traditional styles.
Other Attractions: The New Orleans Jazz Festival is also famous for exhibiting local foods, crafts and photography related to indigenous music and culture. In addition, there is an interview stage, where musicians are interviewed. Gradually, with the New Orleans fest gaining importance, a lot of performances started being staged. Some of the best known performers during the recently held jazz fest include Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, and Jimmy Buffet.
The New Orleans jazz Festival also holds various night concerts at venues other than Fairgrounds. The week of jazz Fest sees a number of music events being held across the city.
When is it celebrated? The Jazz fest is usually held on two weekends during the end of April and beginning of May. The festival has always been a major tourist attraction and fetched huge crowds except the time severe rainstorms placed havoc with the city of New Orleans.
The Jazz and Heritage Festival is produced by Quint Davis. It is run by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation. This foundation also has the license to the radio station WWOZ. The New Orleans Jazz festival draws huge crowds and enjoys immense popularity. It is great way of preserving and disseminating the indigenous music and culture of New Orleans and Louisiana. It is also a great platform for young jazz musicians to exhibit their talent. |
